BioFoundry® Glossary
Binning A search optimization technique that a BSP may employ. It is based on searching the population according to the intrinsic characteristics of the biometric data. The database of the biometric data may be, for example, presorted in order to speed up matching captured biometric data with comparison data. While it may improve the speed of the match operation, it may also increase the probability of missing a candidate.
Biometric device A device which is a part of a Biometric system, that contains the sensor which captures a biometric sample from an individual. It can be self-contained to perform the entire biometric authentication within itself.
Biometric sample A biometric characteristic of an individual as captured by a biometric system, considered to be "raw data". (For example, the image of a fingerprint).
BioAPI The API specification developed by BioAPI Consortium for serving various biometric technologies.
BioAPI Registry Database The database that stores the Framework, BSP and Device schemas, as defined by the BioAPI standard.
BioFoundry® A family of standards-based Biometrics products offered by OSS Nokalva, Inc.
BIR Biometric Identification Record. It refers to any biometric data returned to the application. It may be raw data just captured by the device, intermediate data in between processing, or processed data ready for verification/identification etc.
BSP Biometric Service provider. A BSP typically performs Biometric operations like enrollment, verification, and identification. They control biometric hardware devices, implement any custom or standard biometric algorithms for processing and matching, and support any custom or standard biometric data formats.
Capture The primitive Biometric function of taking a biometric sample from the user.
Enroll The Biometric function of collecting biometric samples from an individual and subsequent processing to create a template representing the individual's identity for storage.
FAR False Accept Rate. The probability that a Biometric system will incorrectly identify an individual.
FRR False Reject Rate. The probability that a Biometric system will fail to identify an enrolled individual.
Identify The Biometric function of comparing one or more submitted Biometric samples (after processing) against all of the Biometric reference templates in the database to determine whether they match any of the templates. A list is returned showing how close the samples compare against the top candidates in the set.
Keyset A collection of managed keys, each identified by a label.
M1 The US National Standards development organization, run under the auspices of INCITS
Managed Key A key (public, private, or symmetric) or a data structure carrying information sufficient to create or retrieve a key.
Match The primitive Biometric function of comparing a Biometric sample against a previously stored template.
Process The primitive Biometric function of processing the captured data into a usable form that can be used for verifying, identifying or enrolling.
Protection Context Contains all the information needed to apply cryptographic enhancements to a biometric descriptor, or to remove any existing protection from a biometric descriptor.
Payload Any identification information, which is carried inside the biometric data record. A payload can be used as identification for an entity once biometric authentication is successfully completed.
SC37 The Biometrics sub-committee from ISO/IEC
SPI Library Wizard Part of the BioFoundry® ® BSP Builder that generates skeleton code for creating an SPI Library.
Template The template of biometric data is created after the completion of Process. It is stored in the BIR database for future verification/identification.
Verify The Biometric function of comparing a submitted Biometrics sample from an enrolled individual after processing against the reference template of the individual whose identity is being claimed, and determining whether it matches the stored template.
