Many proprietary biometrics products have been in use for years and many are still being deployed. As the biometrics industry matures, the user community is strongly calling for standards. Users, both in the private and governmental sectors of many countries, realize that standards are necessary to ensure product quality, to protect investments, and to limit costs. These issues are particularly highlighted in large-scale, complex installations.
The adoption of standards brings greater flexibility in product selection, enabling product mixing and matching to meet specific needs. User, developers, and system integrators are able to build better solutions at a lower cost.
The BioFoundry® suite is built around the BioAPI, X9.84, and CBEFF standards. Each of these standards addresses a very important aspect of a complex biometric system.
ANSI/INCITS BioAPI 1.1 defines a framework in which biometric software components are installed and advertise their capabilities. The BioAPI provides:
- Simple application interfaces
- Standard modular access to biometric functions, algorithms, and devices
- Secure and robust biometric data management
- Flexible deployment of biometrics across platforms and operating systems
- Rapid deployment of biometric applications
ANSI X9.84 2003 (Biometric Information Management and Security) defines a rich set of messages that carry biometric data in a secure fashion. The standard addresses the issues of integrity and privacy of biometric samples and templates in a flexible way, by providing several different security mechanisms among which the user can choose.
NISTIR CBEFF (Common Biometric Exchange File Format) defines a set of concepts inherent to the exchange of biometric data and a set of "patron formats".
OSS Nokalva is an active participant in biometrics standardization at both the national level (INCITS Biometrics M1) and the ISO level (working group SC37).
OSS is committed to implementing new biometric standards as they are developed by American and International committees such as INCITS M1, OASIS XCBF, and ISO/IEC JTC 1 SC37.
